Good morning USA indeed. That is the tagline we are forced to endure during the opening. It is not long before we shriek in horror as we discover the first gimmick. Every episode starts with American Dad flying out the door and grabbing a newspaper. The headline is always some bizarre, barely cohesive joke. Why must every animated sitcom steal this theme from the Simpsons? At least the Simpsons openings are original and witty. A newspaper though? I think they are grasping at straws.

I get it. This show is obviously a weekly shot at Republicans. The Dad is a neo-conservative CIA agent who continually fouls everything up. His wife is the voice of reason of course. Their son is a nerd who is in constant need of approval. The daughter is a hippie. Obviously planted to be typically rebellious. Now things get strange. For some unholy reason the cast also features an alien. This alien is neither cute nor cuddly. It is disgusting and gross. That is not even the worst of it. Last but not least this cast features a fish who speaks English with a German accent, and he is infatuated by the mother. He lives in a bowl yet the bowl mysteriously travels through the house and appears in almost every shot.

This is the single worst animated sitcom I have seen yet. That cast makes no sense. The jokes are tired. The creators are really just trying way to hard to invoke humor at the expense of Republicans. Don’t get me wrong. I love political humor. But this hardly classifies as humor. I think the creators are just stretched thin, especially with the other show they also have on the air. It’s clear which show they put more time and effort into.

The animation is quite decent. It’s on par with most other animated shows showing today. It’s certainly not innovative or creative though. This reminds me of some cartoon you would see done by a grad student at some Californian art college. Amazingly, I do end up watching this show every week. Not because I’m a fan, just because I am too lazy to change the channel after Family Guy. The one thing this show has going for it is a great time slot.
