My God, do I have to sit through another college twenty-something’s finding their way movie? Have I not seen Animal House a hundred times? Have I not watched PCU and Van Wilder so many times I can quote them as if they were classic Longfellow? Why does Hollywood keep churning them out? Did we not get enough angst in Old School?
Well apparently not, cause here we go again.
As it begins we meet Bartleby, your typical average high school kid. He’s semi-popular. He doesn’t rule the school but he’s not a nerd either. He’s your typical all-American slacker. He watches all his friends go off to college, but due to his slacker ways he doesn’t get accepted anywhere. His parents are depressed over this fact and he generally starts feeling like a loser.
There’s only one thing to do. Make up your own fake school. He started by creating a fake college website. Then he needed mail for the school so he started a PO Box. Then he needed to actually find somewhere to go, so with his tuition money he bought some condemned buildings just south of another college.
Then comes the problem. Lots and lots of other slackers have come across his fake website, and it auto-accepted everyone who applied. So suddenly a whole campus full of losers shows up with tuition in hand. Bartleby gladly takes their money and renovates the school and makes it look somewhat professional. They start running fake classes and before you know it they have a full functioning college institution.
Well obviously this doesn’t go unnoticed. A real college just North of them exposes the whole thing. Rather then throw in the towel and go home, the kids decide to fight. The movie climaxes with the kids having a hearing to become an accredited school.
What I really liked about this movie is they didn’t try to throw in some moral lesson. It was just a fun off the wall comedy. It didn’t make sense and could never happen in real life, but so what? It made me laugh. The plot wasn’t deep by any means, and saying the characters got developed throughout the film would be a grave overestimation. But it was a fun comedy. It doesn’t require you to think, just enjoy. The producers make no apologies. This movie isn’t going to change your life, but it’s a great way to kill a lazy afternoon on the couch.
