It must be difficult to watch a character you had created translated into other mediums. Hellboy made the transition from comic books to big screen quite well. The Hellboy movie was great, and in my opinion overpowers the X-Men movies.

How does he fare in his first animated feature? Good…but far from classic.

“Sword of Storms” came across as a 3 episode cartoon special. It was softened up (plot and imagery both) for a potentially younger crowd (more like Heckboy) but it was still a fun romp.

The Sword in question has imprisoned a thunder demon and a lightning demon for centuries (hence the storm moniker), and as they make a run for freedom, it’s up to Hellboy and his team to figure out what’s going on and how to stop it.

The voice cast rotated Frazier alums…losing David Hyde Pierce and gaining Peri Gilpin (mmm….Roz) which is a fair trade. Selma Blair captures the smoky, sultry Liz well, and Ron Perlman IS Hellboy as far as I’m concerned.

While this isn’t the pinnacle of animation by any means, it’s functional, and is a good way to introduce younger fans to the Hellboy universe. Hardcore fans might be let down, but there’s still enough here to entertain the casual viewer. Hellboy still gets to beat a whole lotta bad guy ass, just without all the gory details.

When compared to other animated superhero fare available today, it’s a good choice, just as long as you realize you won’t be getting the full Hellboy experience. 3 cans out of 5.
