I Know Who Killed Me

Back when “I Know Who Killed Me” was coming to theaters, Sony released a few teaser trailers…and the gist of the message was a) there’s a thriller mystery and b) Lindsay Lohan on a stripper pole.

You got me again Sony…that was enough for me to be intrigued.

The presentation of the story is convoluted from the onset…we have visions of Lohan at her stripper gig, and then reading the story of the stripper in a high school English class. We’re to assume that the stripping sequences are just scenes from her story, since reality is presented as her high school self (Aubrey).

But on one fateful night, Aubrey is kidnapped. A serial killer in the area is taking girls to his lair, hacking off their right hand and shin, then killing them. So on the surface it appears that Lohan has a very small role in the flick.

But…a few weeks after she disappears, she resurfaces on the side of the road, bloody and unconscious. Once she comes to however, she recalls nothing of her past life, and believes she’s Dakota Moss, the aforementioned pole dancer. Is this a case of a torture victim blocking out the real world and hiding in the dark recesses of her imagination, or something far weirder? The local authorities and psychologist would have us believe the former – but that wouldn’t make for good thriller fodder, now would it?

Nay, our suspension of disbelief is put to the test in this outing…and if you’re willing to put aside reality for a while, it’s an interesting premise. Art Bell shows up in a scene…so we know there’s gotta be something seriously screwy going on.

And screwy it is. As a whole, the story was like something from EC Comics, or maybe a brutal episode of Twilight Zone. Like “Tales from the Crypt” with less carnage and requisite 5 minutes of nudity.

I had a hard time accepting the premise – but once I did I had a more enjoyable experience. If I had gone in expecting more of a fantasy twist rather than a straightforward thriller, it would have been much more enjoyable. Overall though, it was an interesting story, a decent cast, and a creepy enough antagonist.

There’s a TON of duality references throughout, and heavy use of red and blue coloring to differentiate between Lohan playing Aubrey and Dakota…enough that any pot rattled high school Sophomore could crank out a decent essay for their English class. It’s worth a rental at least, and maybe a purchase if you’re one of those people that like to analyze every frame once you know how the mystery pans out. It’s a 3 cans out of 5 in my book, and a decent way to kill a couple of hours.
