2006 was a damn good year for movies for this Bum, and it was also full of real crap as well, which makes it tough to narrow down 12 months worth of flicks to a best of/worst of.
Yes, I'm sure you're fed up with all the best of/worst of specials and commentaries going around this time of year, but we do things a little differently here. We ask each reviewer to look over movies that they reviewed, and make their selections from that list...so only the best (or worst) reviews are hand picked by our crack team of critics. The fun thing about the project is going back through a year's worth of work, remembering all the fun, and all the pain...then knocking back a few and dulling the silly emotional side.
Normally there’s one standout that buries the other films, but I had 3 films in the running for Best Of 2006, and 2 that stunk so bad not even Febreeze could end their stench.
And on that note…let me introduce to you the hands-down worst film I reviewed this year…
Biggest Pile Award - Black Dahlia – Going into the last part of the year, I thought for sure “Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector” was a lock for my Biggest Pile award. Unless director Ulli Lommel comes over to BumsCorner headquarters, craps all over my carpet, smears it around, lets it dry, then rejuvenates it with cat piss, he cannot stink up the movie room any more than he did with “Black Dahlia”. Do not watch this, not even for comedic value. This is my new measuring stick for bad movies. I’d rather watch anything than go through this hell again.

Runner Up Pick o’ the Year – Last Rights of the Dead – I watched a ton of great movies this year, and this was by far the best horror flick of the batch. For a gory zombie flick, this had more depth, humor and character development than most period pieces. This actually had me thinking for several days after watching it, which hasn’t happened since I watched “Cookers”. It’s easy to dismiss because of the high level of blood and guts…but there’s so much more about our society beneath the ‘zombie film’ surface. Find a copy and enjoy it!

Pick o’ the Year – Gamers – One of the greatest joys of being webmaster for an entertainment site is all the semi-nude pictures we’re sent on a daily basis by starlets that want to garner our attention. Okay, I made that up…but it would be sweet if it were true. Since that doesn’t really happen, the next greatest thing about being a webmaster for an entertainment site is being exposed to films that I never would have heard of without BumsCorner pointing me in the right direction…and “Gamers” is such a film. If you didn’t pick this up after I recommended it in my review, I’ve got two words for you…”Jerky, bitch!” See…you’d get that if you listened to me! “Gamers” is cruel, dark, insulting and almost pathetic, but for anyone that’s ever rolled a character, this is your film. It combines charm and cynicism to create a very realistic scenario, and had fun along the way. I’d garner that this’ll hit for 2d10+2 on your funny bone. Alright, that was unnecessary, but it felt good. This is the kind of film that I want to take over to all of my friends’ houses that refuse to watch anything that’s not a major release.
