"Best and Worst 2007: Scraps Posted by: Scraps

Features Holy crap, has it really been a year since we last went through this process? Where does the time go? Since the last yearly review, we’ve posted hundreds of reviews, a handful of hard hitting interviews, and even added some of our stupidity to YouTube. Oh, and we drank like longshoremen on leave. That’s a lot.

I thought my “biggest pile” entry was going to tough, since I had watched so many shitty movies this year. “Gronk, The Blade” and “Lightspeed” had a shot at it, but there was one movie that was so bad it bothered me for days on end. And then, just when I was ready to move on, I received an email from someone trying to defend the project. Hey, anyone that can complete a feature deserves respect, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.

Funny story involving this title – there’s a small used movie store by BumsCorner HQ that I like to hang out in on weekends. One day when I was there, a customer brought “Zombies Gone Wild” to the counter. Before the owner of the place could ring him up, I interjected. *Yes, I am so self important that I press my opinions on strangers.* I told the guy the movie was really, really bad…and I offered to buy him any other movie in the joint if he gave me the DVD so I could throw it away, but he was dead set on ruining his evening.

Anyways…”Zombies Gone Wild” was hands down the worst flick I saw this year. Again, kudos for finishing it, but Jesus…did anyone else watch this before it got distribution? I’ve had oil changes that were more entertaining! It’s so bad in fact that it makes me feel dirty just having it on my DVD shelves. If any of you sadistic bastards who are still reading this want my copy, email me at scraps@bumscorner.com with your shipping info. First sicko to shoot me their info gets it.

As a juxtaposition to the crapfest, my “best of” this year was a toss up. I looked at the handful of 5 can reviews I doled out in ’07 and narrowed it down to two – “Chainsaw Sally” and “Under the Raven’s Wing”. Both were very, very good flicks with amazing female leads, and while Chainsaw Sally revitalized the American slasher genre for me, Raven created such depth in the story and characters that I was deliberating it with myself for a few days after the first viewing. I’m not a big thinker, so for a movie to sink in to a point to where I obsess on it, it’s gotta be something special. Sorry Sally, you’re hot and you scare the piss out of me…but Raven gets the golden fishwrap this year.

Currently “Under the Raven’s Wing” is on the festival circuit (oh man, I hope they bring it to Cinema Wasteland in April) but I urge you to scope it out. Keep an eye on their site (undertheravenswing.com) for info on screenings, grab some popcorn, sit back, relax, and let Raven pop out your eye and skullf*ck you.

And on that note, have a bitchin’ 08, and we hope to split a pitcher with you at some point this year. As long as you’re buying.
