Bum Interviews:
The Monique Dupree Interview
What's cooler than finding a warm $20 in the dryer? Why, spending some quality time with Monique Dupree, the first black Scream Queen, that's what! Monique took a few minutes out of her busy schedule to chill at BumsCorner and talk about stuff near and dear to our hearts. Like booze and nipples for instance.

Scraps: So Monique, after several decades of the “Scream Queen” moniker being thrown around – why did it take this long for a black scream queen to emerge?

Monique Dupree: That's a really good question. I've been asked that several times, yet, I still can't come up with a good answer. I would like to clear up though, that obviously, there have been lots of black women in horror films in various roles. These women do not consider themselves to be scream queens for whatever the reason over time. Sometimes, I think that we as scream queens get a bad rep..But with the strong scream queens that are emerging, coupled with the dynamic ones that clearly shown staying power, we're bringing some bloody goodness back to the title!
Scraps: Tell us a little about your history in the movie business.
Monique Dupree: Well, My film career was born when I was a teenager I landed a small part in the movie "Lean on Me" (yeah, I know..its not horror!) that's when I knew (even with the gruelling hours)that this was what I wanted to do with my life.

Scraps: While researching your work, I came across tons of images of you showing off your, um, assets. I take it you’re not against nudity in horror?

Monique Dupree: As far as nudity? Hell yeah! I say the body is beautiful, what's wrong with showing it? I don't know, maybe it’s because I'm an exhibitionist or maybe it because I don't think there's anything taboo about seeing/showing your body. I'm def not against nudity. If I were, I wouldn't be working as much, lol..and that's the truth. A little (or big) nipple has never hurt anyone. (except in one of my movies)

Scraps: Gotta love the nipples of all sizes. Are T&A important to a horror flick?

Monique Dupree: More nudie questions?

Scraps: Um, yeah, that’s kind of a running theme around here.

Monique Dupree: Lol Since you're asking my personal opinion, I'll answer. I don't think it’s important to a horror flick, but damn! I sure love seeing it. When I think of horror, I think of blood, gore, screaming, tits, blood, tits, the shock effect & more tits...But that's just me. That doesn't mean it’s important to me. It's just visually stimulating.
Scraps: I heard you were going to be on Tara Banks’ show…what’s that all about?

Monique Dupree: It's funny you should ask this question right after the T&A questions.

Scraps: It’s got a nice flow to it, doesn’t it?

Monique Dupree: I was asked to take part in the show because I'm in support of women who bare their bodies to earn a living (ie:strippers)I'm a woman who loves to go to stripclubs & watch women dance. I personally think its beautiful! So the show's topic focuses on the subject of strippers. They had two panels of women. one who are in support of these dancers & even go out with their husbands/boyfriends/girlfriends to these clubs (I fall in that category) and the other who were against the whole idea of it all who actually felt like dancers give women a bad name. So it was an interesting show. And Tyra is the sweetest and most hard-working black women out there.

Scraps: Working on any cool projects right now?

Monique Dupree: I have about a dozen projects this year that I'm filming and half a dozen coming out, so this will be quite a busy year. I'm producing a film called Prey to God from Blood and Guts production. We are still looking for investors for that project so if anyone's interested, do get in touch with me (www.myspace.com/actualbast).
I'm working with Low Budget Pictures this year in the film Caspian. I'm always working with Darkstone Entertainment. I'll make an appearance in Skeleton Key 3. I'm also on board for Blood de madam..A film through Dark Society Pictures. There are several projects that I don't have the green light to discuss yet, but I'm very excited about as well!
Scraps: A bunch of us are dying to hang out with you in person…what’s your festival schedule look like?

Monique Dupree: I'm going to be at a host of conventions throughout the US this year including, Texas Fear Fest march 7-9th, Monster Mania March 14-16th, Flashback Weekend June 27-29th and a few others. However, if there's anyone that would like to see me at a particular convention, just go to the website of that convention and request me as a guest. I'm always willing to add on another location if schedule permits.

Scraps: If you had a chance to remake any horror film and pick your role, what would it be…and why?

Monique Dupree: The Children!!! I'd want to remake The Children. I would want to be one of the parents to get killed by their own child. I just think that movie is wild and if done today (without a bunch of CGI) could be a great remake! It's also a scary thought for me considering I have 6 children, lol I could probably cast half of that movie from my house alone, lol

Scraps: What’s hotter - g-string & mini skirt, or silk panties?

Monique Dupree: G-string and mini skirt! no question..

Scraps: We love having people over and enjoying some drinks, since it tends to loosen them up a bit. If you were swinging by, what drink should we have ready for you, and how many would it take for you to get loopy?

Monique Dupree: OK..if you want me loopy, bring red wine..a merlot would do. However, if you want me dancing on the bar, possibly, wearing only my favorite GATA choker, then bring on the Patron dude!

Scraps: Tequila it is! We’re all for dancing on the bar! Thanks a bunch for taking time out of your busy schedule to hang with us…any parting words of wisdom for the BumsCorner fans?

Monique Dupree: Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule for having me. And for having such fun questions. Keep your eyes peeled for me..your Bohemian Gata, Monique Dupree
