Bum Interviews: SV Bell Interview | Indie director SV Bell takes a few moments with us to chat about his new projects.
|
|
Purple Glow I had the great pleasure to interview recently SV Bell about his upcoming flick Purple Glow. Bums out there may remember him from his other movies that we have reviewed, "Cold Blonded Murders/Irish Whiskey", and "The Night They Returned".
Rufus: How have you been?
SV: Doing very well, thanks for asking! Things are pretty busy at this end, we're stacking up projects, planning things ahead, man I can even say that I have a good idea of what my next 24 months of film making will look like!
Rufus: So let's talk Purple Glow. Tell all the Bums out there what this movie is all about.
SV: Purple Glow is about a bunch of folks that more or less get lost in the woods while going on a camping trip. Sounds familiar, heh? (laughs) That night, a meteor crashed on earth, in the neighbourhood where the folks are hanging around. Eventually, one of the girl gets to touch the rock, and a strange reaction cause the girl to become sorta possessed by the spirit within the alien rock, and turn her into a flesh-eating bombshell. Soon the people discover that the 'disease' is spreading. Purple Glow stars Melantha Blackthorne, Michael Brunet, Magenta Baribeau, Costa and Elisabeth Faure, among others. It has been written by Robbie Ribspreader, based on a basic storyline I came up with.
Rufus: I've noticed many of the same actors/actresses are in this film, that were in your other films. (Melantha Blackthorne, Costa, etc.) How is
it to work with them again?
SV: That is great! I mean, when we have fun making a film with a certain group of people, when it works out well and the end result is great, why stop there? I absolutely have no problem working with the same people, I know how they work, I know what to expect from them, and they feel the same, as they know what I am after in my films. But a couple of new names appears in Purple Glow too: Michael Brunet, Magenta Baribeau, and also a bunch of skilled people behind the camera. The early movies I made were with a bunch of non-actors friends, and eventually I got to meet talents that had real acting background. And as I am keeping releasing / producing more movies, I get more and more talents to hook up and get in touch. This is very exciting!
Rufus: One of the great things about "The Night They Returned" was the
soundtrack. What bands can we expect in this film's soundtrack?
SV: Basically, Purple Glow will have much less rock tracks than The Night They Returned. For this one I opted for original music, written specifically for the film, as I wanted to have something very tied to the action on screen. The Night They Returned had a huge music-video look, but Purple Glow should look more like a typical movie, so to speak. Composer Jay Belton is writing the musical score right now, and he works while watching the film. All the music and melodies are therefore very appropriate for each given scenes, it helps a lot in bringing the mood to its climax. I asked him about a retro sound for the score design, something that would remind us of the early 80s sleazy sci-fi movies, lots of keyboard, synthesisers and high pitch tones. Jay nailed it down perfectly, and what I heard so far is simply fantastic.
One of the bands who originally provided music for The Night They Returned, Cheaper Than Therapy, actually composed a song especially for Purple Glow, and we used that track for the theme of the film. That is a classic rock track, with vocals, great, fast-pace rhythm and strong guitars. The song has been used in the trailer, and I already received excellent comments on it. The band even managed to speak 'Purple Glow' in the chorus, that is amazing! I mean, it gives a big-budget look to a movie that is, in fact, a no-budget independent schlock!
Rufus: The effects on your past films have been great. What treats are we in for in Purple Glow?
SV: Honestly, there will be lesser gore scenes in Purple Glow than in The Night They Returned. Or, should I say, the bloody shots are more subtle, therefore more effective I believe. The Night They Returned was totally graphic, in-your-face splatter. That was fun to watch, but very little was left for the audience's imagination. We tried something slightly different for Purple Glow, emphasize more on the story and in the talents' performance, and less on the graphic content. There's also several CGI shots, the opening of the film is CGI, and numerous bluescreen shots are present here and there allover the film. I am very happy with the overall look of the film, and I am anxious to see what the audience will think of it. At this point it's all a matter of how the film will be marketed. People expecting a new The Night They Returned will be disappointed. It's totally different, yet as entertaining.
Rufus: So you're already working on your next feature (She Demons of the Black Sun). Can you tell us alittle about that one?
SV: Yeah, we're filming She-Demons these days. Roughly that is the story of a young, innocent girl, who gets raped by some people she knows, who thrown some love drug caps in her beer. Next morning, once the girl realize she got abused, she decides to revenge and call Lucifer to give her a hand, and the Evil One sends her four of her demons to perform the task. One by one the guys get into serious trouble. Have you seen Mantis in Lace? Well She-Demons is quite alike, sorta. It's a real female vengeance movie. All demons are stunning babes, Melantha Blackthorne plays Lucifer, and Isabelle Stephen plays the young innocent girl. Well... she'd not that innocent, you know... The film also stars Suzi Lorraine, and a couple of local scene jaw-dropping beauties like Penelope Jolicoeur and Marie-Claire Benoit. Lots of fetish girls, some nudity scenes too, and guys being butchered. This film has been written by the author of Purple Glow, Robbie Ribspreader. Again I provided Robbie the basic storyline in a couple of pages, he took it from there and built the whole movie around that. It's always a pleasure working with him!
The film takes place mostly in a creepy basement and in a goth nightclub. Special makeup effects are from The Night They Returned team Texa FX, so again we can expect lots of chopped limbs and crushed skulls. What was subtle in Purple Glow may come back to its full graphic splendor in She-Demons. The Texa guys love to go with wayout makeup effects, as long as I set'em loose with gallons of blood and beautiful babes to splatter. Let's put their ghastly tastes to use again! For She-Demons, I also hired a professional Director of Photography, and it makes a huge difference in the production quality. Shots made with crane, steadicam, dolly, all the nifty stabilization hardware that make a film look professional, as opposed to the usual indie productions' shaky handheld shots. We also purchased a great deal of lighting equipment, so all these ressources put together and an award-winning DP / makeup effects team let us anticipate a very professional-looking and highly entertaining - yet totally indie - no-budget flickos.
Rufus: When can we all expect to have Purple Glow available for purchase?
SV: It's coming soon! Jay Belton should deliver the final mix of the audio tracks by the end of April. From there, a couple of weeks of DVD mastering, also gathering around some cool stuff for the DVD extras - we got some rather funny bloopers and outtakes - and we're in business. While I am already taking orders for the disc, the movie is expected to ship by the end of May. As for She-Demons of the Black Sun, we aim at a Halloween 2005 release date, but it's still learly to talk about a precise date for that one. So many things can go wrong in the making of an independent horror film!
Thanks alot SV for your time and information. I don't know about you Bums out there, but Purple Glow and She Demons of the Black Sun sound like one hell of a time. Here at the Bumscorner we're big fans of SV's work, and hope he keeps them coming. Keep your eyes peeled Bums for a review of Purple Glow in the future!
